The Series

Growing up in Shropshire always lent me to being active in the outdoors from wild camping, hiking and wild swimming all through the cold months. Drawing has always been central to my work, from designing garments and capturing movements of people in everyday settings to unworn strewn about garments. Being at the Royal Drawing School combined these two tendencies of mine and we were encouraged to take outdoor drawing classes in the parks within the city. Having been on my first two outdoor climbing trips to Llanberis and Portland I started thinking about drawing rock and seeing the rock in relation to now I draw cloth and garments, with all their folds and worn edges I found I could translate the two easily. The series is of three recognisable climbs in different locations around the world. I have focused on composition and space within the page to highlight the route and different types of rock. @sophienicoledodds

Biography

Sophie-Nicole Dodds is a making practitioner who sews, draws and prints. She studied Bespoke Tailoring at the London College of Fashion and interned for Wales Bonner and the Royal Opera House. Since then, she has worked as a textile hand-worker for Roberts Wood, tailoring assistant at McCann Bespoke Tailors, and currently as a costume maker at Academy Costumes for film and theatre. In 2020 she completed her MA in Design: Expanded Practice at Goldsmiths, where her making focused on expanded fashion practices. She became drawn to everyday moments of wear in textile objects from the Textile Collection at Goldsmiths and the importance of the ‘archive’ became central to her work, whether that be historical textiles or our own everyday textiles. In 2021 she designed and created two displays at The Courtauld Gallery & Science Museum for a project called Illuminating Objects, using items from their collection. She continues to work with the Courtauld Research Forum on a freelance basis, giving and running talks, seminars and drawing workshops within their ‘After Hour Events’. She has just completed her scholarship at the Royal Drawing School on The Drawing Year 22, showing at Christies London.
